How to compare electricity providers
Our free and non-binding service gives you the opportunity to compare electricity providers and thus find from a large selection a more affordable provider that’s perfect for you. You need precious little to make a comparison and start saving: Just your annual electricity consumption and postal code. After entering this information, start the free comparison with the click of a mouse.
Shortly, a list of electricity providers that come into question for you will be shown. You can then choose a provider from the list. Before making up your mind at this stage, we’d like to make you aware of the advanced settings, which give you the opportunity to narrow the search according to your wishes and demands even more. For instance, if you’re interested in green power, check the corresponding box. Now repeat the search for more customized results.
Using the advanced search settings is not a must. We provide this little extra service as a purely voluntary option to help customize and narrow down your search to make comparing electricity providers easier and more rewarding for you.
We’d like to point out to you two especially important points:
Please make sure to choose an electricity rate with a price guarantee. This price guarantee means that for the time period the guarantee covers your power provider cannot simply adjust the price at will, so you enjoy a stable electricity rate – your chosen price is guaranteed. Also, avoid offers requiring prepayment. Opt instead for an offer including monthly installment payments. By making monthly payments for your electricity consumption, you will have a better overview of all running charges.
Additionally, you also have the choice between long- and short-term rates. If you prefer to remain flexible to react better to market developments, rather choose a rate with a shorter term and cancellation period. Again, these are only informative suggestions. You are free to decide what is important to you in an electricity provider and rate.
Once you have customized all search options as desired, restart the search. In a few seconds a new list will appear complying with your search settings. This list provides you with a comprehensive overview of possible power companies, their offers and contract terms. Take your time to look over this list carefully and choose the electricity provider that’s right for you. If you don’t find a provider you’re interested in, don’t worry. Our service is free and non-binding, so you’re in no way obligated to switch.
Should you decide to switch electricity providers, there are several options to do so. You can request all necessary documents to be sent to you without commitment, or switch right away online. To do so, simply click the button “Request documents”. You’ll proceed to a page where the rate details and extra information are compiled. Review the offer you’ve chosen and switch immediately online or request/download the necessary documents.
The documents can be sent to you by mail or email. Simply enter your street or email address and the necessary documents will be sent to you – you still have no obligation to complete the switch.
If you opt to switch online, you’ll need to provide all the important data. You will receive a 14 day cancellation and all contract information by email. Switching offline normally takes about eight weeks. Switching online is generally faster.
Now all you need to do is make sure you send your new provider all the necessary documents for switching. Everything else, including the cancellation of your old power supply contract in due time, is taken care of by your new provider. There will be no supply gap – you will have continuous power at your home or business. Special German legislation, the Basic Electricity Supply Ordinance (Stromgrundversorgungsverordnung), guarantees your right to continuous electricity supply – on condition that the consumer pays all electricity bills and refrains from contract cancellation.
Why compare electricity providers?
You may wonder why you should even compare electricity providers when you already have an energy provider. After the liberalization of the German electricity market in 1998, all electricity providers, regardless of their size, had the opportunity to find their place in the market and provide consumers with electrical power. Individual companies began vying to secure the business of customers – the switch had been flipped on economic competition in the German power industry.
You can use this competition to your advantage. More than 930 different electricity providers light up German businesses and homes nationwide. This means you as a consumer are veritably swimming in a sea of choices. While it is true that not each power provider’s offer is available in every corner of the country, the consumer does enjoy on average a choice from among more than 30 utility companies. The range of options available to you increases exponentially when you consider that each provider offers a variety of electricity rates to choose from.
Make a comparison of electricity providers and you will be benefited in a number of ways. Firstly: Take your market power as consumer in hand and actively join economic competition, benefiting not only yourself but the market as a whole. After all, increased competition ensures that power companies strive to create and maintain attractive offers for you as consumer. This entails special services and offers. In spurring on competition, you also help prevent a few large power companies from gaining a monopoly and the impunity to set prices at their own arbitrary discretion.
Additionally, you can reduce the price you pay for your electricity. If you switch to a more affordable power provider you’ll lower the kilowatt hour rate you pay. As you see, comparing and subsequently switching your electricity provider solves several problems at once. And you can be sure that the comparison is independent and impartial. We suggest only electricity providers that meet your wishes.
So why not give it a go? Compare electricity providers and pay less for power. Now that pays.
